Good morning! ⚒️ Do you know which skilled trades make more than $100,000 a year? NBA star Scottie Barnes does. In a new ad for the Skilled Trades College of Canada, Barnes nails the question on a gameshow as part of a new recruitment campaign.

📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

Apprenticeship enrolment is up at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. NAIT's apprenticeship enrolment stood at 7,000 in 2022-2023, up from about 6,500 the year before. More than 1,950 apprentices graduated from their NAIT programs during the same period. School officials say the skilled trades program is expecting a 12% increase in the coming year.

👷‍♀️ PEOPLE MOVES

Tanya Palson, executive director of the Manitoba Building Trades, has been appointed the new chair of the Manitoba Apprenticeship Board.

Alex Burkinshaw has accepted a new role as vice president of project development at Surespan Group.

Mark Heffernan has been named principal at O’M Engineering. Heffernan has over 16 years of experience in the industry and began his journey as a qualified electrician.

Paul Verhesen, former president and CEO of Clark Builders, has been hired as a strategic advisor for KV Capital. Verhesen brings over 30 years of construction industry leadership to his new role spearheading the expansion of the private equity group into building products acquisitions.

Brent Payne is Marcon’s new vice president of construction. He has 30 years of global experience in civil engineering, transportation, Construction management, project and program management.

Dave Pooley has been named chief financial officer of Bridgit. Pooley will oversee Bridgit’s financial strategy and efficiency across the organization.

Josh Gaglardi, president of Orion Construction, has joined the board of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association. Under Gaglardi’s leadership, Orion has become one of Canada’s fastest growing companies. 

Jason Davidson is celebrating 20 years at PCL. The HSE manager for the company’s Ottawa district left his career as a paramedic to join the construction sector. He’s worked on landmark projects, including the Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion and the BC Place Roof Phase II project.

🗞 HEADLINES

🎒 Two new grants will help Nova Scotian apprentices purchase tools and technology to support their training and launch their careers. Students can receive a one-time grant of up to $1,000 to purchase new tools, equipment and clothing required, while a technology support grant will offer up to $900 for a computer and accessories to apprentices enrolled in training.

🏠 A tiny home pilot project near Thunder Lake, Ont. is training Indigenous youth in the trades and building housing at the same time. The KZ Lodge program recently completed work on a one-bedroom 10x30-foot modular home for donation to Matawa First Nations. 

✈️ The Construction Association of Prince Edward Island (CAPEI) plans to develop and implement a regional immigration plan to help address critical shortages in the sector. The effort is receiving support from the province and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

💵 Concord Projects has donated $100,000 to Red River College Polytechnic in Winnipeg. The funds will support the growth and success of skilled trades and technologies programs. including architectural/engineering technology, construction management, and structural engineering technology.
