📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

According to the latest data compiled by the Calgary Construction Association, 10% of Alberta’s 265,500 construction workers are 15 to 24 years old. Nearly 75% are 25-54 and 16% are over 55. The amount of women in the sector sits at 13.4%.

👷‍♀️ PEOPLE MOVES

Francis Roy has been appointed chair of the Canadian Construction Association’s board of directors. A 30-year veteran of the industry, Roy is president and CEO of Groupe Humaco companies.

Shirin Oshidari has joined Salus as its chief revenue officer. Oshidari has overseen sales and services for innovative construction tech companies like Primavera, Autodesk, StreetLight Data and OpenSpace. She will spearhead Salus’ expansion into the U.S. market.

Dante Gamboa has been promoted to business development representative at 505-Junk

Frank Carillio and Nicholas Pang have joined Stack Modular as project manager and project coordinator, respectively. 

Ricardo Brites has been promoted to director of engineering & VDC at Mercer Mass Timber after two years with the company. 

Troy MacBeth Ambromaitis is leaving Bucci Developments after 11 years. Ambromaitis stated that his time at Bucci was filled with invaluable experiences, growth opportunities, and cherished memories spanning over a decade.

Ryan Pfeiffer is now a partner at Rain City Industrial where he will assume a pivotal role in leading its refrigeration division forward into a new era of innovation and excellence.

Momentum says companies are eager to hire as many qualified newcomers as possible.

🌎 Momentum, a Calgary-based non-profit is finding success training immigrants for careers in the trades. With 90% of its clients being recent immigrants, Momentum says it is focusing on helping them break down cultural and language barriers to reach trades careers. 

💵 The Alberta government is offering a new tax credit that will only apply to skilled tradespeople. The Alberta is Calling program, launching in April, will offer a one-time $5,000 refundable tax credit to tradespeople who move to the province in 2024 and file that year's taxes in Alberta.

🧑‍🔧 A new program at Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont. aims to prepare people who have disabilities for careers in the skilled trades. The accessible welding program’s goal is to expand the number of people with disabilities employed in the trades by providing them with accessible training and support.
