Good morning! ๐ Do Canadians have the big city blues? A recent survey suggests large city residents might be yearning for greener (and cheaper) pastures. Among those surveyed in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, 50% say they'd consider buying property in a more affordable city, provided they could find work there or have remote work options.
๐ LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
Construction is booming despite headwinds. Even with a tough economy and rising interest rates, the industry is experiencing a surge. March 2024 saw over 15,000 new construction jobs filled, with 1.1% monthly GDP growth โ the biggest jump since January 2022.

๐ To address housing shortages, Nunavut is launching a pilot project where students and apprentices will build energy-efficient student housing in Rankin Inlet. This partnership provides valuable construction experience for students while creating much-needed housing, and aims to be a model for future trades training programs in other communities.
๐ผ The BC Construction Association has launched a new online job board called Builders Life TalentCentral to connect job seekers with construction employers in the province. The free platform allows employers to post jobs and find qualified workers, while job seekers can create profiles and search opportunities across all construction trades. It will feature all construction industry job openings, from entry-level to executive roles.
๐ท๐ป Quebec's construction industry with over 211,000 workers is holding its quadrennial union representation vote from June 3rd to 22nd. Workers can choose to keep their current union or switch to one of the five major unions in the industry. The outcome of the vote determines the unions' bargaining power in negotiating collective agreements.
๐ฝ๏ธ To address a worker shortage in B.C.'s film industry, a free 12-week microcredential program is teaching carpentry skills tailored for set building. Led by film industry veteran Hal Keown, the program helps students transition from traditional construction methods to building lightweight sets quickly for movies and TV shows.
