🗞 HEADLINES

🏗️ Is a construction site visit a must for candidates on the campaign trail? Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre visited construction workers with Orion Construction and Lark Group in B.C. this week. His message: “Get government out of the way of our great Canadian construction workers so they can build, build build.” The 45th Canadian federal election will take place on or before October 20, 2025.

✅ Ontario and Alberta are working together to streamline recognition of worker credentials across provinces. This will make it easier for skilled tradespeople to move between the provinces and fill labor shortages. They'll develop a common framework for internationally trained workers and collaborate on assessing experience and qualifications to ensure qualified workers can contribute their skills.

🚢 A planned strike by ship and dock foremen in the Lower Mainland was cancelled after the industrial relations board ruled the union's notice violated labor code by failing to bargain in good faith. The union is protesting labor contracts and automation. A previous strike by the group caused massive disruptions to major construction projects.

🏗️ Seeing spectacular views, eating lunch and taking bathroom breaks hits a bit different while 75 metres up in the sky on a construction site. Crane operator Mark Edwards talks about his 20 years working up in the sky while helping build Manitou, a 17-storey housing complex in Ontario.
