Ontario invests big, a new Alberta campaign, Movember meets construction

Good morning! 📱Screen time for teens might not be all that bad. A recent global survey of young trade professionals revealed that, despite facing social stigmas around their career choices, their strong passion for their trade was heavily shaped by social media.

📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

The BC Construction Association’s Apprenticeship Services program allowed BC construction employers to register 1st year apprentices, over a 2-year period. A total of 2,148 apprentices were registered and $16.26M was awarded as financial incentives. A follow-up survey found that 73% of participants are with the same employer and less than 6% left the industry. 87% plan to continue their trades careers.

👷‍♀️ PEOPLE MOVES

Brian Maksymetz has joined the infrastructure advisory team at Colliers Project Leaders as a managing director. Maksymetz specializes in optimizing project procurement and delivery, using collaborative and traditional contract models. He has 30 years of experience in varied projects working for the owner, designer, and construction contractor.

Jamie Hill has been named Holcim’s new region head of North America. Hill brings his almost 30 years' experience in Latin America, and last five as country CEO of Mexico, to the North American market. He will be based in Chicago. 

Geoff Howe has been promoted to senior vice president and district manager for PCL’s Toronto office, assuming overall responsibilities for company operations in the Greater Toronto Area and southwestern Ontario. Geoff succeeds Marc Pascoli who has been promoted to regional vice president with oversight of PCL’s Toronto area operations and PCL’s Solar operations and will remain based in Toronto.

Jeff Kinnaird will soon be president and CEO of Peak Group of Companies. In his new role, Kinnaird will lead Peak, and work with founder John Gross, who becomes executive chair, to take on the strategic future of the company. Before this role, Kinnaired served as executive vice president of merchandising for The Home Depot and president of The Home Depot Canada

Warren Lippitt is now McElhanney’s vice president for the prairies south region. He will be supporting a team of professionals serving the firm’s three market sectors of cities & communities, Transportation & Transit, and Energy & Resources in Southern Alberta.

🏗️ Doubling down: The Ontario government is investing over $26 million to build a new training centre at LiUNA 183’s Vaughan skilled trades campus. The initiative aims to address the growing demand for skilled trades workers by doubling LiUNA 183’s training capacity to nearly 100,000 workers, focusing on in-demand construction careers like bricklaying and heavy equipment operation. The expansion includes a new industrial workshop, classrooms, and a renovated union hall

📢Restoring respect: Alberta’s government is launching an advertising campaign and website to champion apprenticeship education and emphasize the value skilled tradespeople create. With a $117 million investment in apprenticeship programming for 2024-25, including $78 million for apprenticeship seats at 11 post-secondary institutions, Alberta is expanding opportunities in 47 apprenticeship programs. 

🧔 ‘Mos’ wanted: Movember is launching the Construction Ambassador Program to promote men’s health awareness, especially within the high-risk construction industry. Ambassadors will lead efforts to raise awareness and funds for issues like testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and mental health challenges.
