Good morning! 🏗️ Did you know crews at the Gordie Howe International Bridge project have a mascot? Gordie is a ginger kitten rescued at the site by construction manager Shannon Meeks. The feline has since become popular among the team as a therapy pet whose cuddles are used to help relieve jobsite stress.
📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
The latest national labour data shows 2022 saw new apprenticeship registrations increase at a rate beyond pre-pandemic levels. 81,141 Canadians registered in an apprenticeship program, an increase of 11.6%, or 8,430 registrants, over 2021. This was also the most new apprenticeship registrations since 2014.

Jeffrey Busby has been named TransLink’s new CEO. Busby has led the crown corporation’s engineering team for the past few years.
Joe Geluch, president CEO of Naikoon Contracting, has been recognized by Building Transformations with a 2023 Professional Achievement Award.
Rav Dhariwal is Lark Group’s new estimating manager. Dhariwal previously held similar positions at Kindred Construction and Chandos Construction.
Cesar Boccardo, Bird Construction’s senior digital construction coordinator, has received the Digitalization Strategy Award by Building Transformations. Boccardo said the award holds a special place in his heart, and receiving it feels like a dream come true.
Kent Ferguson is Suncor Energy’s new senior vice president of strategy, sustainability and corporate development after spending 23 years at RBC.
Novy Cheema is the new president and CEO of the University of Calgary Properties Group. Cheema has over 15 years of experience in real estate and development, including helping lead Gracorp.

🚢 Hundreds of workers at the Woodfibre LNG project will be housed aboard the MV Isabelle which plans to moor near the jobsite. The ship underwent an extensive refit of its environmental systems and living, dining, recreation, and gathering areas. It will deploy to site in spring 2024.
🚧 Labour shortages are slowing development in B.C.’s Okanagan region. One multi-family developer, Ariva Resorts, said it has caused them to stop work on phase two of a five phase project. It has also increased costs as much as 40%.
🚅 Experts say the resignation of Canadian National Railway Co.’s Indigenous advisory council shows corporations need to be more serious about reconciliation efforts. The council stated that the company has failed to acknowledge past wrongs and or follow its recommendations.
