📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

The latest Labour Force Survey (LFS) data from Statistics Canada finds that while construction-sector employment contracted over the past year, demand for young workers grew. Data for June 2024 shows an overall, national contraction in employment of -2.2% compared with June 2023. Meanwhile, the industry’s unemployment rate edged up one tenth of a percentage point – from 4.3% to 4.4%. Construction sector employment in June was reported at 1,601,500 workers.

👷‍♀️ PEOPLE MOVES

Michael Tymko is starting a new position as vice president, operations, at Inline Group. Since he joined the company more than three years ago, it has expanded across nine territories and provinces and grown to more than 250 employees. 

Aaron Yohnke is return to Canada to assume the role of vice president, corporate and integrated construction services at PCL’s North American headquarters. This comes after Yohnke spent five years as president, California buildings in the U.S. 

Joel Weerdenburg is QM Environmental’s new vice president, operations Eastern Canada. He has been at the company for four years, previously serving as director and vice president, demolition and hazardous materials. 

Octavio Flores has joined Kiewit as an infrastructure sponsor. Over the years, Flores has collected numerous awards, including being named Top 40 Under 40 in Canadian Construction and one of Construction’s Most Influential People.

🗞 HEADLINES

🧑‍🔧 To address the skilled labor shortage in New Brunswick's construction sector, a pilot program is launched where 15 aspiring carpenters will build 5 houses for Habitat for Humanity while undergoing a 52-week training course. The program aims to train and retain skilled workers within the province and could be expanded if successful.

💻 Graham’s Technology Team has been recognized by CIO Awards Canada 2024 for their innovative Enterprise Data Platform. The platform acts as a "single source of truth" by handling various data types, from construction plans to sensor data, allowing for faster analysis and future-proofed construction capabilities.  Graham emphasizes this award is a team achievement and highlights their commitment to using technology to improve productivity and safety.

🏆 Jason Herd, CEO of Tradetraks, received the Alumni of Distinction Award from Mohawk College. He started young in the trades, excelled in his education, and grew his family business. Recognizing a need for better software, he launched Tradetraks which streamlines operations for construction and service trades. Jason is passionate about the industry, giving back through his work with associations and youth hockey, and is an inspiration for others.
