Good morning! 🧮 A record number of people registering for apprenticeship programs nationwide. However, math skills often present a barrier to entry into skilled trades programs. Math tutoring programs are now experiencing a surge in requests from individuals seeking to pass trades entry exams.

📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

Canada's latest Labour Force Survey for September reports a 47,000-job increase (+0.2%), with notable growth in sectors like information, culture, recreation, and wholesale and retail trade. Employment in professional, scientific, and technical services also rose. Ontario and Quebec saw the largest gains, while B.C. and New Brunswick saw losses. Full-time employment grew significantly by 112,000 jobs (+0.7%), while part-time work decreased by 65,000 (-1.7%). Average hourly wages rose 4.6% year-over-year to $35.59, and the unemployment rate edged down to 6.5%, largely due to lower youth unemployment.

Anthony Minniti is now President of CGI Constructors. Minniti intends to drive innovation using the best-in-class technology while ensuring that CGI continues to provide value to its clients. 

During its annual general meeting (AGM) earlier this month, the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Canada announced Jérôme Pelletier, P.Eng. as the new Chair of its Board of Directors for the 2024-2025 term. Pelletier is president and CEO of consulting engineering firm BBA, where he has more than 20 years’ experience.

Mike Stone is rejoining rcs Construction as its Director of Construction for Nova Scotia. Stone most recently served as Director of Construction for Eastern Canada at Canadian Tire, where he gained valuable insight from both the contracting and client perspectives.

Corey Bainerman has started a new position as Vice President, People Operations (fractional) at Bridgit. He is an award-winning HR executive with 15 years of experience and a passion for startups and HR advisory.

Sean Kelly has been appointed President of EMCO (Canada), effective January 1, 2025. With nearly 30 years of progressive leadership within EMCO, Kelly has played a pivotal role in the company’s growth and success. Rick Fantham will transition to the role of Chairman.

🧔 Hairy situation: Builders are gearing up for the Movember Construction Challenge, a month-long fundraiser for men’s health issues. The effort has undergone a major overhaul this year, making it bigger and better than ever. Organizers say they used a similar model in the energy sector to great success. The festivities will feature a trophy and specially trained ambassadors to amplify the campaign’s impact. 

✈️ Preparing for takeoff: Toronto Pearson has launched a call for proposals for the 2024 Uplift Fund, which will invest $1.75 million to support local organizations creating employment opportunities, with a focus on workforce development. The fund has two streams: one aimed at helping marginalized individuals overcome employment barriers, and the other dedicated to strengthening the construction trades through workforce development projects. 

⚒️ Major expansion: Humber Polytechnic has expanded its Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology by 16,000 square feet to address Ontario’s growing demand for skilled workers and contribute to Canada’s productivity. The $9.5 million expansion, supported by $2.16 million from Humber and over $1 million from Ontario's Apprenticeship Capital Grant, will provide 500 new training opportunities in fields like industrial woodworking, electrical techniques, and HVAC.
