📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
Canada has recently surpassed a population milestone, reaching 41 million people, as reported by Statistics Canada on Wednesday. The agency noted a population growth of 3.2% in 2023, marking the fastest increase in over six decades. This growth has prompted Ottawa to consider reigning in immigration.
👷♀️ PEOPLE MOVES
Mike Snow is starting a new position as chief operating officer for Lacroix Construction. Previously, Snow spent 12 years at TESC Contracting Company where he achieved the general manager position.
Kelly Pelton is retiring from his role as vice president, supply chain at EECOL Electric after 25 years of service. His role will be taken over by Natalia Sershun who has held senior roles in contract management and supply chain at Suncor, Sanjel, and most recently, Graham Construction.
Irvin Heiber is celebrating 30 years with PCL construction. He joined PCL in 1989 as a district engineer. As a construction manager, he is currently overseeing a large and complex building and envelope retrofit in Gatineau and starting up the recently awarded RSS Main Labs project.
Claire Macdonald has been promoted to asset manager for Low Tide Properties. Her previous role was asset management analyst. She has been with the company for more than four years.
Hung Nguyen is Axiom Builders’ latest superintendent. Previously, Nguyen worked at Anthem Properties as an assistant superintendent.

A new report by BuildForce Canada shows heavy-industrial maintenance demands are on the rise, reaching $10B in expenditures last year. As these trends continue, regular scheduled shutdown/turnaround maintenance initiatives will place additional pressures on already-strained labour markets in the construction and maintenance industries.
April is Construction and Skilled Trades Month in B.C. Officials plan to to acknowledge the contributions and profound impacts of the skilled trades workers. It’s the seventh year it has been celebrated. In honour of the month, the BC Construction Association has announced Builders Code Champion winners and Leadership Awards winners.
Nadina Holca, EllisDon’s first ever mental health specialist, is spearheading an innovative approach to prioritize employee mental health in the construction industry. Drawing on her academic background in psychology and public health, Holca is meticulously crafting a mental health strategy akin to occupational health and safety programs.
