📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
Payroll employment in construction fell by 0.6% in October, following a gain of 0.3% in September and a decrease of 1.1% in August. In October, payroll employment in construction was down by 16,200 from its July peak and was virtually unchanged from March. Declines were recorded in heavy and civil engineering construction (1.4%), specialty trade contractors (0.4%) and construction of buildings (0.6%).

John M. Beck, Aecon founder and chairman, has been appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest civilian honour.
Colleen Federchuk and Eithar Naman have been promoted to vice president of people and culture, and vice president of digital construction at Fitzrovia, respectively.
Brandon Alpine, a Ktunaxa citizen, will be honoured with an educational bursary partnership at the College of the Rockies. Alpine, who passed away last year at age 39, was part of the Aecon Industrial West team and the Construction Maintenance & Allied Workers (CMAW) union. The bursary will be sponsored by Aecon, CMAW 2300 and Alpine’s mother, Janice.
Pomerleau reached a major milestone this week. The company, along with its subsidiaries Borea Construction and ITC Construction, announced it now employs 5,000 people across the country.
Jason Metcalfe has started a new position as acquisitions and development manager at Diverse Properties.
🗞 HEADLINES
👷🏽♀️ According to recent data from Statistics Canada, three sectors with low-wage jobs — accommodation and food services; retail trade; and administrative and support, waste management and remediation services — accounted for more than 40% of all temporary foreign workers in recent years.
✊ A tentative deal has been reached after massive public sector worker strikes in Quebec. The deal would see pay go up 17.4% and aim to protect workers from inflation. The group of unions, known as the Common Front, represents 420,000 workers in healthcare, education, social services and more.
🦺 In 2024 Ontario is updating the Occupational Health and Safety Act to increase safety for crane operators on construction sites. Two new regulations taking effect this year are designed to ensure cranes are installed properly and inspected and maintained regularly.
💵 A new study suggests that CEO pay is on the rise. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the average top CEO in Canada now earns $7,162 per hour. In 2022, the most recent year of data, Canada’s top 100 CEOs were paid $14.9 million per year, on average. In 2008, when the centre began tracking CEO pay, the average was $7.4 million.
