Good morning! 👷♂️ Inmates in New Mexico are getting a second chance on life thanks to a new program that teaches them trades skills while in custody. The “Be Pro, Be Proud” program is making stops across the state coaching prisoners in welding, carpentry, robotics and more.
📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
The number of women entering the welding trade in Alberta has surged, with a 60% increase in female apprentices from 2022 to 2023. Officials credited government initiatives, increased accessibility to training, and child care support for the increase. National surveys conducted in 2023 by the CWB Welding Foundation, a charity established by the Canadian Welding Bureau, reveal that 19% of students enrolled in secondary and post-secondary welding programs are female.

Jason Kuiack has started a new role as director of business development at Thompson Construction Group. Previously, Kuiack spent two years at Bothar Inc. as manager of crane and logistics.
Marlon Bray is Clark Construction Management’s new executive vice president. Bray has more than 20 years of experience, including roles at Faithful & Gould, A.W. Hooker and Associates and Altus Group.
Steven MacKinnon is Canada’s newest minister of labour. In his previous role as leader of the government in the House of Commons, MacKinnon accumulated experience building consensus and working with partners to pass legislation.
Allen Moon has began a new role as project coordinator for Scott Construction Group.
🗞 HEADLINES
💵 The Ontario government is investing an additional $260 million in the Skills Development Fund to address the province's labor shortage. This brings the total investment to $1.4 billion. The funding will support training in high-demand sectors like manufacturing, construction, and technology. The government also announced a $7.2 million investment to train 3,300 workers in the Kitchener area.
🔨 The Canadian Institute for Safety, Wellness & Performance at Conestoga College has received $834,550 to fund its CONSTRUCT initiative, aimed at finding innovative solutions to workplace hazards in skilled trades. This investment will allow the institute to collaborate with partners, employ field measurement systems, and develop solutions like inclusive tools and equipment to improve worker safety and performance.
🌴 Quebec's annual construction holidays are underway, with hundreds of thousands of workers taking a two-week break starting July 19th. However, last year's holidays saw a tragic increase in road accidents. Authorities are urging caution and reminding drivers to prioritize safety during this period.
