📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
Researchers recently found that one in five immigrants leave Canada within 25 years, with a third departing within their first five years. Economic immigrants and francophones, key groups prioritized in immigration policies, are the least likely to stay long-term, with affordability and opportunities playing significant roles in onward migration. Retention rates are higher in smaller cities like Calgary, Halifax, and Moncton compared to major hubs like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

🗞 HEADLINES
Full STEAM ahead: 🛠️ The Calgary Construction Association has launched the "Honour The Work" skilled-trades curriculum supplement in 800 Calgary Catholic School District classrooms, reaching over 30,000 students from Grades 1 to 6. This program uses STEAMS Kits—hands-on, curriculum-aligned resources integrating science, technology, engineering, math, and skilled trades—to spark interest in trades careers early, addressing the skilled trades labour shortage.
Survey says: 📊 A new public opinion survey from Pomerleau shows that while 90% of Canadians see construction as vital to economic development, far less view it as a good career option. Only 56% of respondents would recommend working in the construction industry to their children or relatives. And only 55% of respondents believe the construction sector offers attractive prospects to young people.
Cabinet shuffle: 🏗️ B.C.has restructured key ministries related to construction. The Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs now oversees housing and municipal relationships. The former Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has been split into two: the Ministry of Transportation and Transit focuses on public transit and major projects while the new Ministry of Infrastructure centralizes capital planning and procurement for other work.
Road to recovery: 🙏 Ryan Mills, a 38-year-old foreman on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, is speaking out about his journey to overcome nearly two decades of substance use. Mills began using opioids at 17 to manage work-related pain. Despite material success, his addiction eventually strained his relationships and led him to Brentwood Recovery Home's live-in program, which he credits for saving his life.
