Good morning! 🤳 Gig work through apps like Uber, Lyft, Doordash is booming in Canada. The latest data from Statistics Canada shows that In the fourth quarter of 2022, 871,000 Canadians did gig work as their main job.

📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

While Ontario and B.C. get the majority of attention due to their population size, let’s check in on the least populated part of the country, the territories (Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut). While overall employment in the region grew in the past year, Construction employment decreased by 11.4% (-500 jobs) from February 2023 to February 2024. However this could soon go up as the federal government plans to build 190 housing units in the Yukon over three years.

Ruth Legg has joined Concert Properties as vice president, environment, social & governance. Legg has spent a decade in financial services, most recently as Americas head of supply chain sustainability and diversity at HSBC. 

Jerome Julier has been appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer for Aecon. Julier brings two decades of leadership experience in finance, strategy, and capital markets with a significant focus on industrial businesses in the construction, engineering, and transportation sectors.

Elliott Altberg has been appointed executive vice president, eastern Canada, at Beedie. He joins Beedie with almost 20 years of experience in real estate in capital markets, private equity/pension fund investments, property brokerage, and corporate mergers and acquisitions at some of the most pre-eminent real estate and investment banking firms in North America.

Jennifer Mallard has been selected as principal for Henriquez Partners Architects’ new Toronto studio. Previously a partner at Diamond Schmitt, Mallard developed extensive knowledge of the Toronto market, with over 30 years of experience leading the design and delivery of civic, residential, educational and institutional projects.

Mike Keane has been hired as a senior project manager at Roc Modular. Keane has nearly a decade of experience in the modular construction industry, successfully managing a variety of large-scale modular multi-unit housing and commercial projects.

Josh White has been chosen as the City of Vancouver’s next general manager, planning, urban design and sustainability (PDS) following an extensive recruitment process. His most recent role was director, city and regional planning and co-chief planner at the City of Calgary.

🗞 HEADLINES

🚧 The Opposition Progressive Conservatives in Manitoba are blocking legislative plans which aim to ban the hiring of replacement workers and streamline union joining procedures. The NDP government's proposed bills included one to outlaw the utilization of replacement workers during strikes and lockouts, and another to eliminate the necessity for secret-ballot voting for union membership, opting instead for unionization if a majority of workers at a site sign union cards.

⚒️ Saskatchewan is investing an additional $1 million to increase the capacity for the development of skilled trades. The funding brings the total investment into the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission to $22.4 million in 2023-24, which supports apprenticeship training in trades such as construction electrician, plumber, sheet metal worker and much more.

🪚 The United Brotherhood of Carpenters has received $4.8 million from the Government of Canada to provide apprentices with financial supports and wrap-around services, eliminating barriers and obstacles to their progress in training and completion of their certification
