Ontario's proposed laws, incendiary devices on site, New Brunswick has a new brand

Good morning! 😞 Feeling down? A new survey shows Canadians under 30 are among the least happy group in the country and one of the most discontented in the developed world. Some are beginning to argue trades careers offer young adults higher standards of living and financial security that could help reverse this trend.

📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

Admissions of permanent residents with trades skills rose 29% from January through March from the average quarterly rate in 2023, according to government data. If this rate continues, Canada is projected to grant residency to roughly 17,800 skilled construction workers in 2024.

🗞 HEADLINES

👷🏻‍♀️ Ontario is starting a conversation about periods. The government of Ontario has introduced historic legislation that would require menstrual products be provided for workers on large construction sites. The changes would also clean bathroom requirements and expand the definition of workplace harassment to include digital spaces.

⚒️ New Brunswick has a new brand. Officials have launched Skilled Trades NB, the province’s rebranded vision for the future of skilled trades and apprenticeship. The new approach aims to raise the profile of the apprenticeship program among employers and potential participants, and to build on recent growth of the program.

🔥 Incendiary devices were discovered under heavy equipment at a $7-billion Northvolt electric vehicle battery plant under construction near Montreal. The devices, which were designed to catch fire after a delay, failed to go off and nobody was injured. Officials believe the incident could be related to groups that oppose the project.
