Men's health fundraising, AI in the office and Chandos' president moves on...

Together with

Good morning! Welcome to the inaugural issue of Talent Thursdays. We hope you enjoy our celebration of the people who power construction.

What to expect: Every Thursday, we’ll send you a 3-minute read on everything people in construction. It’s about major promotions, hires, awards or retirements. It’s about the hottest jobs on the market. It’s about labour headlines. It’s about how to become a better professional. It’s about you.

📣 NEW AWARD

Introducing Construction’s Most Influential People

Nominations are officially open for Construction’s Most Influential People, a new awards program that will honour outstanding individuals who are impacting the construction sector. The annual program will shine a spotlight on Canadians having a massive positive impact on the built environment and the construction process. Winners will be announced early next year and our team is planning to celebrate with an in-person event.

📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

B.C.’s latest labour market forecast shows that between 2023 and 2033, approximately one million job openings are expected. Here’s what it means for builders:

  • Approximately 66,600 roles will be in construction, 7% of the total.

  • More than 75% of construction jobs will be due to retirements.

  • The most in-demand trades will be carpenters, labourers, heavy equipment operators and electricians.

Bearded bucks: November is nearly over and Canadian builders spent it growing beards and raising funds for men’s health issues, including cancer and mental health. Companies that participated in the Canadian Construction Challenge managed to raise more than $280,000. Way to go!

Banned: Ontario is proposing legislation that would forbid employers from requiring Canadian experience due to critical skilled labour shortages. If passed, it would be a first for Canada.

Missed opportunity: Recent data shows small businesses in Ontario missed out on more than $16 billion in revenue in 2022 because of labour shortages. Construction was by far impacted the most, losing business opportunities last year valued at over $9.6 billion.
