Calgary releases labour study, bridge builders do a river rescue, February People Moves is out

Good morning! 🛟 Safety applies to everyone near a job site, not just workers. Crews working at the Gordie Howe International Bridge were awarded Silver Medallions of Safety by Fluor for rescuing four people from the frigid water after a boat capsized.

📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

The Alberta government has set aside $24 million yearly in Budget 2024 to help create 3,200 new seats at 11 post-secondary institutions. If approved, it would be in addition to existing government grants, bringing the total to $78 million annually.

👷‍♀️ PEOPLE MOVES

Trevor Doucette has joined Synergy Group of Companies as its new senior director of operations. Doucette will work closely with Synergy's management team to ensure the success of the projects it undertakes and help them continue to grow their footprint across Alberta and Canada.

Paul Forgues has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Edmonton Construction Association. Starting his career as a draftsman, Forgues worked his way up to become project director at Bird Construction

Ilana Danzig and Will Watson are the newest principals to join ASPECT Structural Engineers. The firm stated that that Danzig and Watson embody ASPECT’s core values of quality, accountability, drive, diversity, and collaboration, and will act as ambassadors of the firm as it continues to grow

Nikki Keith (Wilson M. Beck Insurance Services Inc.), Sam Brezden (Fort Modular), Ronan Deane (NAC Constructors Ltd.), and Craig Enns (EllisDon Corporation) have joined the Vancouver Regional Construction Association's board of directors.

👷‍♀️ The Labour Market Outlook report from the City of Calgary, the first analysis of its kind at the economic-region-level in Canada, predicts the region will experience 29,100 construction job openings (6% of total job openings) in the coming decade.

⚒️ Reframe — a new program that offers hands-on skill development, networking and paths to enhanced careers — is launching in Barrie, Ont. It will provide three months of rigorous training in residential construction to 15 skilled trade workers who encountered employment obstacles. Four more cohorts are planned for the year. 

🖥️ A veteran of massive online sales giants Wayfair, Zulily, Amazon, and Expedia is joining the construction sector. Kathryn Kennedy will serve as chief growth officer for DOZR, an online heavy equipment rental company based in Ontario. DOZR says Kennedy will assist in accelerating its expansion efforts. 

💰 Kelowna-based developer Highstreet has donated $1 million to Okanagan College’s trades and apprenticeship programs. The gift will help provide financial support for students starting an entry-level trades program via 13 annual bursaries of $6,500.
