📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

Between 2012 and 2022, Canada has experienced a decline in corporate head offices, with one-in-20 closing or merging, and head office employment decreasing by 6%, as per Statistics Canada. This reduction, observed across almost all provinces, is partly due to energy companies scaling back post-2014 oil price drops and a restrictive federal regulatory environment.

Ryan Anderson recently began a new role as talent acquisition manager for Axiom Builders.

Elia Edwards is now vice president of integrated water solutions for Associated Engineering. Most recently, Edwards was the division manager, water in the Toronto office and has been with the company for over 27 years.

Tim Murphy has been welcomed by Aecon as its new executive vice president and chief strategic affairs officer. Most recently serving as managing partner and CEO of McMillan LLP, as well as managing director of McMillan Vantage Public Affairs, Murphy joins Aecon with over three decades of experience.

Rob McKinney has joined SALUS as its new construction safety evangelist. He brings more than 20 years of experience to the role. McKinney first began as a site safety manager at J.M. Wilkerson, advanced to safety director, and later ventured into the construction software space with companies like JBKnowledge, Rhumbix, and Safesite.

Sabine Just is leaving the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association after 13 years to pursue a career in real estate with O’Brien Group.

🗞 HEADLINES

🤝 Procore has announced strategic partnerships with the Afro Canadian Contractors Association (ACCA) and the Canadian Association of Women in Construction (CAWIC). The initiative aims to enhance diversity, inclusion, and innovation within the construction industry by providing minority contractors and women in construction with access to Procore’s advanced construction management tools, training programs, and discounted resources.

🛠️ Nova Scotia’s Journeyperson Financial Incentive Program offers up to $2,500 to journeypersons actively mentoring apprentices. This initiative aims to increase the number of apprentices becoming certified journeypersons. Additionally, eligible journeypersons will have access to online mentorship training.

👷‍♂️ The federal government is considering restricting access to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program for employers in certain regions and industries, despite the rising unemployment rate. Employment and Social Development Canada met with business groups to discuss reducing reliance on temporary foreign workers. Officials are contemplating halting some employers' applications for hiring through the program's low-wage stream, marking a shift from recent expansions.
