Immigration policy changes, Manitoba adjusts ratios and Vancouver builders honoured

Good morning! 💻 AI is becoming commonplace in construction. A recent study found that Nearly 75% of global AEC companies are using AI within one or more phases of their building projects. However, over half (54%) of those using AI are concerned about AI regulation and of those, 44% say these concerns are having a real impact on AI implementation within their companies.

📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

The greatest growth in employment over the past year occurred among the youngest demographic, those aged 15 to 24 years. Both the employment and labour force figures increased significantly within this group, with the labour force growing by 21.7% (an increase of 38,200 workers) and employment rising by 24.4% (an increase of 40,600 workers). This substantial increase highlights a surge in young workers participating in and contributing to the construction sector over the past year.

🗞 HEADLINES

🌍 Immigration reduction: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will significantly reduce its immigration targets, lowering the number of new permanent residents to 395,000 in 2025, 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027. This shift comes in response to criticism that the government's previous goal of 500,000 annual immigrants was unsustainable, especially amid housing shortages and growing public concern.

👷‍♀️ Finding the perfect ratio: Manitoba is implementing regulatory changes to restore the 1:1 apprentice-to-journeyman ratio for most designated trades. This shift responds to safety concerns. Proponents say the new ratio will help apprentices receive the proper support needed to build their careers.  Employers may still use the 2:1 ratio for existing agreements or apply for temporary adjustments.

🏆 Go for the Gold: The Vancouver Regional Construction Association has announced the winners of its Gold Awards which celebrates exceptional people and projects in the construction industry. Canadian Turner Construction Company and Gisborne Industrial were major winners, each taking home multiple Gold Awards.
