📈LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
An increasing number of Burnaby high school students are joining the Youth Work in Trades apprenticeship program, allowing them to work and train in various trades during Grades 11 and 12. Students who excel academically and complete their training can earn a $1,000 grant. The program, which began in 2005 and has expanded to offer training in 25 trades, has seen significant growth, with enrollment rising from 150-180 students five years ago to 300 this year.

🎒 NAIT has restructured its academic framework, transitioning from four to seven schools. This change aims to strengthen the connection between academic programs and industry by grouping related disciplines together, fostering collaboration, and enhancing the relevance of education to the evolving economy and technologies. The restructuring is designed to address issues of program silos and declining industry ties, ensuring that students are better prepared for the workforce.
🧑⚕️ Community Savings Credit Union and the Construction Industry Rehabilitation Plan (CIRP) have partnered to support BC construction workers undergoing mental health and substance use treatment by addressing the financial barriers that often hinder treatment adherence. Through their Recovery Protection program, members in treatment will receive three months of relief on loan and mortgage payments, along with a suspension of service fees.
