Matt Gramblicka, vice president of IT and enterprise applications at Graham, laced up his skates and helped set a new world record. He and 40 others played for 262 consecutive hours, the longest hockey game ever, raising $1.5M for charity.
📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
New data from WorkSafeBC shows that the construction sector in B.C. had a time-loss claims rate that was 24% higher than the provincial average for all sectors. Across B.C., the time-loss claims rate was 2.40 per 100 workers in 2022, while in construction it was 2.98. WorkSafeBC says it plans to launch a series of inspections this year focused on improving those rates.

David Podmore, president and CEO of Concert Properties, has announced his retirement as chair of the company's board, effective this summer. The board plans to name a new chair in the coming weeks.
Patrick Crabbe, Shaun Stiles and Jon Higgins have joined the Off-site Construction Research Centre at the University of New Brunswick as executive board members. Crabbe is director of mass timber at Bird Construction, Stiles is vice president and area manager for EllisDon and Higgins is VP Canadian operations for Stack Modular.
Omar AL-Humaimidi announced that he is now quality director for the Surrey Langley SkyTrain Station Contract at Aecon Group.
Silvia Koteva has joined Infrastructure BC as a senior associate. Koteva brings years of infrastructure experience focused on leading major health infrastructure projects through the business case phase of work, integrated capital planning, contract negotiation, and managing complex federal funding programs.

🔎 Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan says he has appointed an Industrial Inquiry Commission to investigate the underlying causes of B.C.’s port strike last summer. The federal government says strike caused a major economic disruption as longshore workers walked picket lines for just under two weeks last July.
✈️ Construction leaders in P.E.I.'s are looking to England and Ireland to much needed skilled tradespeople. The Construction Association of P.E.I. the region’s home builders association, some construction businesses and immigration officials are heading to job fairs this month in Birmingham, England, and Dublin, Ireland.
💵 Experts say a major overhaul planned for Ontario’s multi-employer pension system will benefit the construction sector. The new framework will replace temporary regulations governing Specified Ontario Multi-Employer Pension Plans (MEPPS) with a new regime of permanent target benefit pension regulations.
⚖️ A former SNC-Lavalin executive has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison in connection with a bribery scheme for a bridge-repair contract in Montreal, the RCMP say. Normand Morin, formerly a high-ranking vice-president at the firm, received the sentence Tuesday after his conviction for corruption and fraud last month.
