Good morning! 🚔 Criminals, beware. When faced with a rash of construction jobsite thefts, police in Washington State attached GPS trackers to tools and waited. The tools were promptly stolen and the tracker led police to their suspect and $45,000 in equipment.

📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

In October, employment in business, building and other support services rose by 29,000 (+4.2%), the first increase since May. On a year-over-year basis, employment in this industry—which includes establishments primarily engaged in activities that support the day-to-day operations of organizations, from waste management to administrative services—was up by 33,000 (+4.8%).

👷‍♀️ PEOPLE MOVES

Steve Chapman is now Vice President of Construction at Rain City Industrial. Chapman has over 30 years of experience in industrial, heavy industrial, and commercial construction. Part of his role will be to lead its newest division, Rain City Heavy Industrial, as they expand into the oil and gas, mining, chemical processing, power generation, and heavy manufacturing industries.

Woodfibre LNG has announced the appointment of Luke Schauerte as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer. Schauerte brings more than 20 years of experience in the energy industry. He comes to Woodfibre LNG from LNG Canada where he served as Vice President, Asset, helping to guide the construction and start-up of Canada’s first large scale LNG export facility.

Brynn Nheiley is now Executive Director at Sustainable Buildings Canada. Her experience includes urban planning, climate change mitigation, LEED feasibility/analysis, policy research and more. Prior to this role she worked as Executive Director Community Planning Regulation & Mobility for the City of Burlington. 

David Bianchi is now Vice President, Real Estate and Development at Tim Hortons. Previously, Bianchi held a similar role at Canadian Tire. 

Paul Whelan has accepted a new position as Manager, Project Delivery, for the Ministry of Saskbuilds and Procurement for the Government of Saskatchewan. Whelan spent the past six years at Westridge Construction. 

🗞 HEADLINES

Helmets on: 🪖 The Ontario government is investing $3 million over three years in Helmets to Hardhats Canada to help 650 active and former Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members transition to civilian life by training them for careers in Ontario’s construction sector. 

Quebec bound: ✈️ Registration is now open for the Canadian Construction Association’s 2025 Annual Conference. The conference will take place March 11-14 in Quebec City. In addition to panels and keynotes, the association will announce the winners of its National Awards. 

Groundbreaking work: 🏅 Dr. Kerry Rowe, a professor at Queen’s University, has been awarded the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal, Canada’s highest honor for non-medical scientific research, for his work in landfill and mine waste containment. Originally focused on dam construction, Dr. Rowe shifted to waste containment after the 1970s Love Canal environmental disaster near Niagara Falls, N.Y., where residents were exposed to harmful landfill toxins.

Major trial: ⚖️ The trial of Vas Georgiou, former CAO of St. Michael’s Hospital, and John Aquino, former president of Bondfield Construction, opened with the Crown alleging that the two secretly collaborated to secure Bondfield’s $300-million contract for the hospital’s redevelopment.
