Good morning! π οΈ Construction workers are getting some satisfaction. According to new research, a whopping 90% of tradespeople are satisfied with their careers, a number that has grown since the pandemic. Researchers found that these workers felt meaning and value in their work, were happy with their pay and appreciated flexible work hours.
π LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS
April was monumental for female employment in Quebec's construction industry, with a 26.3% increase totaling 10,000 female construction workers. According to BuildForce Canada, the province has seen employment among women increase more than 10% each month in this year. Growth in employment among women was also strong in Alberta in April (+17.4%).

Cristal Sargent has begun a new role as mentorship advisor team lead with the BC Construction Association's Building Builders Mentorship Program.
Patrick Lalonde has been promoted to senior director, digital project delivery at EllisDon. He joined the company nearly 14 years ago as a BIM coordinator.
Lynn Richman has joined NUQO as a senior project manager. The company noted that with over two decades of modular construction industry experience, Richman is one of the most experienced and respected modular project managers in Canada, managing over 400 modular construction projects including key developments for BC Housing and the 2010 Winter Olympics in B.C.
Travers Stephan is celebrating ten years with Westridge Construction. He has led diverse projects, from water treatment plants to bridges. Most recently, he spearheaded the construction of the Douglas Park Pickleball Court Development.
April Watson has retired from Sanderson Concrete after working as its office manager for more than 25 years. Company officials noted that her intelligence, kindness, and dedication have shaped Sanderson's workplace into a community of warmth and camaraderie.

π» Skilled Trades Ontario has launched a new online information centre, the STO Resource Hub, which provides easy access to reports, resources and research on the skilled trades sector in Ontario. This initiative aims to streamline access to information about skilled trades careers and help people learn more about the 144 available trades in the province.
π A new study suggests that despite enthusiasm for AI's potential, many companies are struggling to implement it due to a lack of strategy, skills, and proper data infrastructure. While executives are optimistic about AI's benefits, the reality is that most businesses are unprepared to harness its power and risks falling behind if they don't invest in building a strong foundation.
π A Canadian roofing company, IKO Industries, partnered with a recruitment agency to hire Venezuelan refugees in Peru with in-demand trade skills. They offered them jobs as production operators with a path to further qualifications in Canada, aiming to address both the company's need for skilled workers and provide displaced people with a new opportunity.
π·ββοΈ With over 200,000 new Alberta residents in a year, the industry needs to build more roads, bridges, and housing. The problem: a lack of skilled workers. Almost a quarter of the 2023 workforce is expected to retire by 2033, and the vacancy rate for construction jobs has jumped to 6.7%. Companies are struggling to find qualified workers, even with increased training programs. This shortage could mean a shortfall of 22,000 workers by 2033.
