📈 LABOUR BY THE NUMBERS

A recent report highlighted that trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. threatens high-quality Canadian jobs in industries heavily reliant on U.S. demand. These industries offer higher average wages ($36.92 vs. $33.16), more full-time permanent roles, greater union representation, and better pension coverage than other sectors. While exact job loss estimates are uncertain, the report warns that potential layoffs would largely impact well-paying, stable jobs that could be difficult to replace. Some of the highest paying jobs in this category included pipeline transportation, and oil and gas extraction.

720 Modular is breaking new ground in the modular space. They delivered the East Coast’s first complex multi-storey modular housing project in Prince Edward Island, demonstrating the speed, efficiency, and community impact of modular construction. 👶 You’re adopted: The Calgary Construction Association (CCA), in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education, has launched the Adopt a Shop pilot program to connect local construction businesses with middle and high school shop programs. This initiative supports teachers and students by providing industry mentorship, hands-on learning, materials, and financial contributions, aligning with Alberta’s CTS and CTF curriculum to prepare students for careers in skilled trades like construction, welding, and mechanics.

🚂 Fast train: The Ontario government is proposing legislative changes to accelerate the construction of Skills Development Fund (SDF) training centres by cutting red tape, helping workers impacted by U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty. The measures include fast-tracking approvals for training facilities, cracking down on fraudulent job postings, streamlining health and safety system recognition in procurement, and modernizing the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program.

🏠 On strike: Workers in Quebec's residential construction sector launched an unlimited strike at midnight after failing to reach a deal with developers represented by the APCHQ, disrupting projects for homes and buildings of six floors or fewer. The strike, led by an alliance of five major unions representing a portion of the province’s 200,000 construction workers, centers on demands for salary increases of 22–24.3% over four years.
